HUMAN RESOURCES FEATURE OF THE MONTH
RESUME REALITIES AND NETWORKING TIPS

Job Seeking Realities - A resume is not intended to land you a job, but to get a prospective employer interested enought to contact you.  Your resume is a primary marketing tool that advertises who you are and what you can do.  If you have not received much response, it may be that your resume is an inadequate marketing tool.

The age of the internet recruiting has altered the fundamental nature of the job search, even for executives.  The widespread popularity of Internet job boards inundates HR Professionals, recruiters, and managers with hundreds of relevant and irrelevant resumes for each posting.  This mismatched pool of resumes must be pared down to a manageable number that closely matches job requirements.   Commonly the individual screening the resumes has little knowledge of your industry or background.

Let's look at the Top 10 Pet Peeves of recruiters from a survey of over 2500 recruiters/headhunters:

-  Personal information not relative to the job

-  Unqualified candidates who apply for jobs they are not qualified for

-Paragraphs that are long - no bullet points

-  Long resumes - way too long resumes

-  Functional resumes as apposed to a chronological resume

-  Poor formatting, boxes, templates, tables or the use of footers or headers

-  Contact info that is inaccurate or no email address on a resume

-  Dates not included or innacturate dates

-  Too duty oriented - reads like a job description rather than accomplishments

-Spelling errors, typos and poor grammer

Top 10 Resume Realities

1.  Define your jargon; 2.  Use Short precise statements; 3.  Define each company in your resume; 4.  Describe your credentials in terms of benefits to the employer;  5.  The reader will categorize you, so choose the category; 6.  Although necessary, assume cover letters will not be read; 7.  Use correct spelling and grammer; 8.  Highlight accomplishments with bullets; 9.  The purpose of your resume is to pass initial screenings; and 10.  A resume is a marketing tool not a life history.

NETWORKING BASICS:

- Discipline your self to make a minimum of two calls per day, consistently.

-  Use networking to keep in touch, understand the marketplace, mentor and give and receive information.

-  Approach networking as information gathering; rather than position identification process

-  Speak to as many people as possible; at least 5 for every networking event you attend

-  You never know whom someone else knows, is related to, or is a neighbor of - ask for that information when you are networking

- 50% of employment in the US is with companies emplolying fewer than 150 employees

-  Many jobs are not advertised, networking is critical in a job search
